How self-storage works

Self-storage with Shurgard is easy and convenient. Here’s how to organise it in 4 easy steps.

With Shurgard Self-Storage, all you need to do is:

  1. Choose a storage unit
  2. Book your storage unit
  3. Pack your things
  4. Move them in

Step 1. Choose a storage unit

Pick a storage location

Shurgard locations in the UK

Shurgard has 26 locations in and around London and in the Thames Valley.

It’s worth considering several locations even if some are bit further away because they are all individually priced.

Find the right-sized storage unit

Different storage unit sizes

Shurgard’s storage units vary in size from 10 to 300 square feet. Working out what size storage unit you need is easy with our size estimator. It does the calculations for you.

Alternatively, you can get advice from one of our experts. Call free: 0800 368 0420.

If you have more or fewer things to store than you thought, don’t worry. We don’t charge a transfer fee, and you can always move to a bigger or smaller unit at any time.

Step 2. Book your storage unit

When you reserve your storage unit online, you’re also reserving its price and special offers. We’ll hold them all for you for 3 days.

It’s absolutely free to reserve a unit. You don’t even have to give us a credit card to make a booking – your name, email address and telephone number are enough. And once you’ve booked, there’s no obligation to rent. You can change or cancel your booking at any time – again at no cost.

Step 3. Pack your things

The right boxes and packing materials make moving so much easier.

You’ll find a wide range at all our locations, including:

  • Boxes: choose from different types of boxes as well as glass dividers and a starter pack consisting of a selection of boxes.
    See our boxes.
  • Packing supplies: stock up on bubble wrap, glass dividers, mattress bags, dust covers and high-grade tape that keeps your boxes sealed.

Step 4. Move in

The on-site manager will help make your move in easy and smooth. The whole move in process takes about 15-30 minutes, so make sure you arrive at least 30 minutes before closing time.

The on-site managers are at our stores:

  • Monday to Friday – 9am-6pm
  • Saturday – 10am-4pm
  • Sunday – 10am-3pm

Sign your contract

Sign your contract

You’ll be asked for your driving licence or passport and to show that you’ve taken out insurance for your stored items.

The on-site manager will then fill in the contract with you, show you the unit, and answer any questions you may have.

Accessing your unit

PIN code entry

You’ll get a personal pin code from the on-site manager, giving you access to the facility.

You can access your unit 7 days a week between 6am and 11pm.

Moving in to your unit

Moving your belongings into your storage unit

Your on-site manager is available to answer any questions and offer advice, including how to use your space as efficiently as possible. To make your move as smooth as possible, use one of the trolleys at the facility to help with unloading for free.
