As John Arumaimayagam grows his new business, he uses his unit as a warehouse and distribution centre without being locked into a long lease. Here is what John says about using a Shurgard storage unit:
“For us, it’s really important to have a very clean, dry and secure place to store our South East Asian sauces. But easy access is also a very big thing for us.
“Shurgard Gypsy Corner is an excellent location with immediate routes into central London and out onto the North Circular.
“If we had some warehouse tucked away somewhere on an industrial estate in the middle of nowhere, drivers wouldn’t be able to find it. But the Shurgard store is highly visible.
“Our deliveries of Dine In Sauces arrive once a month on pallets and then we distribute them, as and when we need to, so that they’re at food and gift fairs and artisan markets all over London.
“One of the reasons, we’ve taken a self-storage unit and not a warehouse is that as we grow our business and see how it evolves, we want fixed costs and not be obligated to pay a long lease.
“We’ve got the option of downsizing or upsizing with Shurgard. And if we feel that Dine In Sauces outgrows storage units, we can give just 14 days’ notice. That’s a big plus point for a relatively new business that’s at the stage where flexibility is needed.
“We’re getting the brand out there, getting our sauces known and our hope is that retailers will begin stocking them. When that happens they will go from the production facility to the wholesaler instead.
“That’s the long-term aim. But for now we’ve got a storage solution that’s right for our current business aims.”
